Officer Jim D. Swint was born on January 17, 1961 in Lima, Ohio. He was a
1979 graduate of Lima Bath High School and subsequently joined the Marine Corps in which
he served for seven years. After completing two enlistments he became a member of the
Brunswick Police Department. In public service Jim found a purpose. He believed in helping
others and was willing to sacrifice himself to protect his country and community. Patrol
Officer Jim D. Swint died in the line of duty on October 01, 1990.
The Officer Jim D. Swint Scholarship Fund is a living memorial. At the time of his death
Jim was attending Southern New Hampshire University, to him education was the way to help him better
serve the public.
AWARD
This scholarship fund will annually award one (1) $1000.00 scholarship to a student pursuing a college education in a field of public service. This award will be announced each May. After the student successfully completes the first semester of school and continues their college education, a check will be forwarded to the college in the name / account of the recipient.
ELIGIBILITY
Successful applicants for the Officer Jim D. Swint Scholarship must:
- attend Brunswick High School or attend Maine Vocational Region Ten as a Brunswick student
- study an area of public service : A field which will benefit the public by supplying
an essential
commodity or service, i.e. transportation, law enforcement, teaching, nursing, etc.
- Maintain an academic average of B- or better
- complete the required essay on "Public Service"
This scholarship is intended for students with some financial need. Each applicant must complete the attached financial form.
PROCEDURES
Applicants must complete this application and an essay of not more than 250 words on "Public Service". The applications must be signed students and their guidance counselor and returned to the Brunswick High School Guidance Department by March 15. A decision will be made by May 15.
